One of my favorite pictures from my childhood is one of my mother sitting in a chair in the corner of our living room, Bible open on her lap, and pen and paper resting on the arm of the chair. (Wonder why Dad chose to snap that picture?) I also remember many Sunday mornings getting up really early and finding my Dad sitting at the dining room table, Bible open. Of all the memories I have of my grandmother, what I remember most is that her Bible always stayed in one place — on the table next to the place where she ate every meal. With so many images and remembrances of the Word of God playing an active role in the lives of those who shaped mine, I believe that God had a plan for me at a very early age to read, study and fall deeply in love with His Word.
His plan is the same for you! All you have to do is take the time to open it, read it and speak it.
God’s Word is truth.
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17)
God’s Word is powerful.
For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 Amplified)
God’s Word is flawless.
“As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. (2 Samuel 22:31)
God’s Word is accomplishing.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10-11)
God’s Word is refining.
“Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? (Jeremiah 23:29)
God’s Word gives us direction.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)
God’s Word is our strong foundation.
I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. (Luke 6:47-48)
God’s Word is eternal.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Matthew 24:35)
God’s Word is right on time!
